Summer 2007
Band was formed in the traditional ideology of a “band.” Shirley on vocals, Lennat on drums, Evelyn on guitars and Alf on bass.

December 2007
Recorded first demo “Spit It Out!” as an entry submission for Baybeats 2008.

January 2008
Got through the first round. The second round of audition was a tough beast to conquer but we managed to kick ass and score a spot at Baybeats 2008.

February - August 2008
Rock ‘n’ roll boot camp. Wrote songs, played gigs, made friends, had fun and suffered from the occasional punch-ups. If Tyra Banks can “model through it,” we would like to believe that we “rock through it” too.

August 30, 2008
Baybeats 2008. The day we’ve been so nervous/excited over came and went like a flash.

October, 2008
Eve and Alf called it a day. They will always be honorary members of the band till the end of time.

November 2008 - March 2009
Shirley and Lennat roped in the ex-Super Illegals boys - Terence on guitars and Ian on bass - to session for two gigs. Good times, bad times. It’s just rock ‘n’ roll but we like it.

April - May 2009
Future seemed uncertain as no suitable candidates were able to fill the big shoes of Eve and Alf permanently. We wanted a “rocking, beautiful mess” on bass and discovered that this person only exists in the movie, Prey For Rock & Roll. Where’s Drea de Matteo when you need her?

May 2009 - Current
Shirley and Lennat decided to call off the search and soldier on as a two-piece. As of now, we enjoy being a duo. Like Twin Peaks, it opens up many possibilities and offers permutations of twists and turns. Computers run on binary codes and you see where it’s taking us.

THE OFFICIAL “PROPER” VERSION

Fueled by the love for rock ‘n’ roll, Midnight Marvel is a Singapore based garage rock outfit that sets out to write songs, play gigs, and have fun. The band – Shirley Ong (songwriter/vocalist/guitarist) and Lennat Mak (drummer) – draw their influences from the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sleater-Kinney and Blood Red Shoes, and aim to deliver a tight blend of straightforward, hard-hitting and catchy rock ‘n’ roll.

Since the band’s formation in the summer of 2007, the band has recorded a demo for the song “Spit It Out!” that earned them the much sought after spotlight as one of the 11 new local bands to look out for at Baybeats 2008, Singapore’s annual three-day alternative music festival.

With an undying and ferocious passion for a united vision and sound for the band, Midnight Marvel will continue their uncompromising pursuit of doing music that they would love to play and listen to.

Says Shirley, “You can do any music you want, but the important thing is to stay true to yourself and create music that you would have a passion for. And don’t forget to have fun while you are at it!”
